While hydrotherapy cannot cure osteonecrosis, it plays an important role in helping manage the condition by allowing Hazel to exercise in a way that places minimal stress on her joints and affected bones.
The buoyancy of the warm water supports her body weight, reducing pressure on painful areas while allowing her to strengthen the muscles that help stabilize and protect her joints. Swimming also improves cardiovascular fitness, increases range of motion, helps maintain muscle mass, and can reduce stiffness, making it easier for Hazel to stay active and comfortable.
But what makes Hazel’s sessions so special isn’t just the physical benefits, it’s the joy she finds in the water.
From the moment she arrives, her excitement is contagious. Her tail starts wagging, she eagerly heads toward the pool, and once she’s swimming, you can see how much she truly loves every second of it. To Hazel, hydrotherapy isn’t a treatment she has to do it’s something she gets to do. She splashes, swims with enthusiasm, and leaves each session happy, relaxed, and fulfilled.
That combination of fun and therapy is what makes canine hydrotherapy so powerful. Dogs don’t realize they’re working hard to improve their strength, endurance, and mobility. they simply know their having the best time.
Watching Hazel continue to enjoy life, despite living with osteonecrosis, is incredibly rewarding. Every swim is another opportunity to keep her moving, support her body, and most importantly, let her do what she loves.
Her journey is proof that even when a condition can’t be cured, we can still help dogs live happier, stronger, and more comfortable lives one joyful swim at a time.

One of my favourite moments is welcoming a senior dog into the pool for the first time.
There’s something so special about watching them slowly begin to trust me, then seeing their bodies move with a freedom they haven’t felt in so long. The stiffness fades, their tails start wagging, and for a little while, they’re not thinking about sore joints or aching muscles. Their just enjoying the water.
Those happy tails, relaxed faces, and quiet moments of trust are why I love what I do. Every senior dog deserves the chance to feel comfortable, confident, and weightless again. It’s an honour to be part of that journey. ... See MoreSee Less

It’s Never “Just a Swimming Pool”
One of the things I hear most often is, “It must be nice getting to swim with dogs all day,” or “It’s a swimming pool for dogs.”
I always smile, because I know what people don’t see.
They don’t see the senior dog who struggles to stand before entering the water, only to move with comfort and confidence once the water supports their aching body.
They don’t see the dog recovering from surgery, taking those first uncertain steps while their family watches, hoping this will be the beginning of healing.
They don’t see the tears in an owner’s eyes when they hand over the leash, trusting me with a member of their family they love more than words can describe.
They don’t see the dogs who come for comfort during the final chapter of their lives when the goal is no longer to recover, but simply to give them one more day without pain, one more moment of peace, one more chance to move with dignity.
And they don’t see the emotional weight that comes with loving every single dog that walks through my doors.
At Hydro Pups, every session is personal.
Whether I see your dog once or a hundred times, I become invested in them. I celebrate every milestone, every extra step, every tail wag, every bit of confidence gained in the water. I notice the little things: the nervous glance, the moment they finally relax, the first time they trust me enough to lean into my hands.
That trust is something I never take for granted.
Dogs don’t understand hydrotherapy. They don’t know I’m trying to help. They simply decide whether they feel safe with me. Earning that trust is one of the greatest privileges of my work, and it’s something I work for every single session.
Behind every appointment is a story.
Some families have exhausted every option looking for relief. Some arrive carrying hope. Others arrive carrying heartbreak. My role is never just about guiding a dog through the water…it’s about supporting both ends of the leash with compassion, patience, and genuine care.
People often see an hour long appointment.
I remember the dog long after they’ve gone home.
I wonder how they’re feeling. I celebrate good veterinary reports. I grieve the losses. There are dogs I’ll never forget, no matter how many years pass. They leave paw prints on my heart just as much as I hope I leave a positive impact on theirs.
Hydrotherapy isn’t just my career.
It’s the responsibility of caring for someone’s best friend.
It’s understanding that every swim could mean less pain, greater confidence, more mobility, or simply a happier day.
It’s showing up with my whole heart, every single time.
So no, it isn’t “just a swimming pool.”
It’s a place where healing begins, where trust is built, where hope is restored, and where every dog is treated as if they were my own.
That is what Hydro Pups has always been about, and always will be. ... See MoreSee Less
