Our Journey with Nixon:
How Hydrotherapy Changed Everything

At Hydro Pups, we know that pets aren’t just animals—they’re family. They fill our lives with joy, love, and unforgettable moments. For us, this became especially true with our dog, Nixon.
Nixon came into our lives as a playful puppy, immediately winning us over with his energy. He had a special love for the snow—running, jumping, and diving into snowbanks, tossing his toys in the air with pure excitement. But when Nixon was just six months old, something changed.
One winter day, after a fun afternoon outdoors, we noticed Nixon’s back leg wasn’t right. He started “knuckling” on his back left toes, and within no time, his leg was completely immobile. We rushed him to the vet, fearing the worst.
After some tests, Nixon was diagnosed with FCE (fibrocartilaginous embolism), a condition where a piece of spinal material blocks blood flow to the spine, causing paralysis. The good news was that Nixon wasn’t in pain—but our once-energetic boy was now unable to walk on his own, and it broke our hearts.
With Nixon being a large breed, even at six months old, carrying him outside with a sling was no small task. After some research, we discovered that hydrotherapy could help him regain mobility. The problem? There was no hydrotherapy facility in Fort McMurray. The nearest option was in Edmonton, but we didn’t hesitate. We packed up and headed out, determined to get Nixon the help he needed.
After several sessions, we witnessed incredible progress. Nixon went from dragging his leg to regaining his stride and range of motion. The results were nothing short of amazing, and it was then that we knew—we had to bring this service to our community.
Since then, we’ve trained, studied, and poured our hearts into creating Hydro Pups. Our goal? To give other dogs in Fort McMurray the chance to live their healthiest, happiest lives through hydrotherapy, just like Nixon.
